FAQ: Learning & Coaching card decks

Learning & Coaching decks are structured sets of cards designed to facilitate learning, skill development, and personal or professional growth. They provide focused, bite-sized lessons, insights, and exercises that can help users reflect on their goals, challenge their thinking, and build new habits. These decks often cover topics like leadership, productivity, mindset, or specific skills and are used to guide reflection, learning, and action. A key characteristic is their interactive format, allowing users to engage with content incrementally while applying new ideas immediately.

Learning & Coaching decks are used by professionals, educators, coaches, and individuals seeking personal development or guidance in their careers or personal lives. They are often used to supplement coaching programs, self-study, or team-building sessions. Accessing these decks on your phone makes them more dynamic and practical. Users can engage with learning and coaching prompts in real-time, during breaks, or while on the go. The digital format enhances flexibility, allowing learners to absorb new information in short, manageable segments rather than committing to long periods of study.

These decks are used because they break down complex topics into actionable steps, making learning and coaching more accessible and digestible. They help users implement knowledge and strategies immediately in their daily lives. As a mobile app, Learning & Coaching decks become even more valuable because they provide continuous access to learning materials, reminders, and exercises. This allows users to incorporate learning into their daily routines, ensuring consistent progress. The app’s features like notifications, progress tracking, and integration with other resources increase the value by reinforcing learning through regular engagement.

Learning & Coaching decks are used by drawing cards that introduce new concepts, pose reflective questions, or suggest actions to help users internalize lessons. Being on your phone makes this process more accessible and adaptable to your daily schedule. You can engage with the deck in small moments throughout the day, like during a commute or break, rather than setting aside large chunks of time. The digital format integrates with note-taking, reminders, or sharing insights with a coach or peer, enhancing both the learning experience and accountability.

SIMPLE TRUTHS

UNTANGLE HIDDEN ISSUES

SINGLE DECK

‘Simple Truths’ is a deck of cards designed to help you think about your relationships, be those relationships with people (partner, parent, colleague, etc) or things (money, work, the future, etc).

The deck is divided into two suits, each made up of 100 cards displaying a single sentence:

The red ‘tangled’ sentences represent the thoughts that may be holding you back in a relationship. For example, ‘There’s a limit to my love,’ ‘I would rather dream than act’, ‘I don’t deserve to win’.

The green ‘untangled’ sentences express thoughts that may be more constructive. For example, ‘I will open the door’, ‘I will share my secret’, ‘No more theories, just the facts’.

You are invited to focus on a particular relationship, and then choose up to three red ‘tangled’ cards and three green ‘untangled’ cards. You read the sentences and reflect on how they apply to the relationship in question. Where is the truth?

In some cases, the sentences might confirm what you were already thinking. In other cases, they might name something of which you were only dimly aware. They might challenge your assumptions. They might even get you to rethink the relationship altogether.

There is no limit to how many relationships you can think about with the cards. The two hundred sentences should give you everything you need to express what is hindering those relationships and how to help them.

The beauty is in the simplicity

My story

When I was in training to become a coach I had a great mentor. She insisted that I generate and memorize some basic, simple questions. She repeatedly pointed to questions that were short, simple and curious. The results were always that it kept the focus on the client and their answers.

These simple open-ended questions empowered my clients. I came to trust the questions and trust my client's ability to discover the answers. The beauty is in the simplicity. The end result is a successful client, a successful coach and greater ease in the process.

What others are saying about Q? Basics

"I found using the Q?Basics powerful and effective in teaching coaching skills to seasoned leaders in my Leadership Enhancement Retreats. The participants stated that they found Q?Basics added great value and expedited their learning of coaching skills. They wanted Q?Basics sets for themselves."

Diana Gabriel, PCC
Professional Certified Coach

"Marcy, I love your open-ended question cards. Your three main categories (color-coded for ease of recognition) of Simple and Curious; Expanding Awareness; and Taking Action relate very closely to the coaching model I teach. I’ll be recommending this attractive and useful deck of coaching question cards to coaches, as well as anyone who wants to refine their communication skills."

"Q-basics is useful for the newer coach seeking to learn a solid set of coaching questions or for the more experienced coach or manager wanting to get back to basics. This deck has multiple uses as a training tool or as a way to keep your coaching stance when working with a client."

Paula Hemming MA, PCC
Former Director of Life Coaching Education
Adler Graduate School, Minneapolis MN

"I have given the cards to my apprentices in Singapore and they are thrilled with them. They are just learning to coach, so the questions have been very helpful to them."

Rebecca Bradley MCC,
President of Partnership Coaching Inc.
Marietta, Georgia

"I used Q? Basics in a University Leadership class of 25 Executive Directors. After completing the wheel of life assessment tool and choosing an area from the assessment they wanted to work with, participants were introduced to Q? Basics. They were each given three questions, one from each category, Simple and Curious, Expanding Awareness and Taking Action. They applied the questions in that order, to their chosen area. The feedback was profound and powerful and helped participants commit to action in a very short time. I found Q? Basics to be a great way to introduce new people to coaching by helping them become more comfortable and safe with the process. I highly recommend these cards to all coaches and trainers."
