SIMPLE TRUTHS

UNTANGLE HIDDEN ISSUES

SINGLE DECK

‘Simple Truths’ is a deck of cards designed to help you think about your relationships, be those relationships with people (partner, parent, colleague, etc) or things (money, work, the future, etc).

The deck is divided into two suits, each made up of 100 cards displaying a single sentence:

The red ‘tangled’ sentences represent the thoughts that may be holding you back in a relationship. For example, ‘There’s a limit to my love,’ ‘I would rather dream than act’, ‘I don’t deserve to win’.

The green ‘untangled’ sentences express thoughts that may be more constructive. For example, ‘I will open the door’, ‘I will share my secret’, ‘No more theories, just the facts’.

You are invited to focus on a particular relationship, and then choose up to three red ‘tangled’ cards and three green ‘untangled’ cards. You read the sentences and reflect on how they apply to the relationship in question. Where is the truth?

In some cases, the sentences might confirm what you were already thinking. In other cases, they might name something of which you were only dimly aware. They might challenge your assumptions. They might even get you to rethink the relationship altogether.

There is no limit to how many relationships you can think about with the cards. The two hundred sentences should give you everything you need to express what is hindering those relationships and how to help them.

The beauty is in the simplicity

My story

When I was in training to become a coach I had a great mentor. She insisted that I generate and memorize some basic, simple questions. She repeatedly pointed to questions that were short, simple and curious. The results were always that it kept the focus on the client and their answers.

These simple open-ended questions empowered my clients. I came to trust the questions and trust my client's ability to discover the answers. The beauty is in the simplicity. The end result is a successful client, a successful coach and greater ease in the process.

"I used Q? Basics in a University Leadership class of 25 Executive Directors. After completing the wheel of life assessment tool and choosing an area from the assessment they wanted to work with, participants were introduced to Q? Basics. They were each given three questions, one from each category, Simple and Curious, Expanding Awareness and Taking Action. They applied the questions in that order, to their chosen area. The feedback was profound and powerful and helped participants commit to action in a very short time. I found Q? Coaching: Introduction to the GROW Model

FIRST STEPS IN USING THE GROW MODEL TO COACH YOURSELF OR OTHERS

SINGLE DECK

Introduction to the GROW Coaching Model
Whether you are already a coach, or you may wish to develop coaching skill, or you simply wish to experience some coaching on your own; this deck is the resource for you!

The GROW Model is one of the most widely taught coaching frameworks and is used by profesisonal coaches worldwide.

Divided into four main sections, these cards help you explore any challenge, opportunity, problem in a way that loosens up your existing thinking patterns and allows your own wisdom and insight to emerge. It's like one of those really great conversations you have with a friend who doesn't tell you what you 'should' do, but you end up feeling really clear.

The four sections are:
Goal - it may sound odd, but many people who come to coaching don't know what they want; but can often identify what they don't want anymore. That's a good start, but the green Goal cards are designed to help get crystal clear on what the outcome actually is. Top tip here: quality time spent in this section is always worthwhile, don't be tempted to skimp!

Reality - this amber section is all about what is stopping them from having achieved the goal already; what gets in the way, what have they tried that didn't work etc. Top tip - sometimes, new coaches are so keen to help clients solve their problem, that they don't spend enough time in this section because they are keen to get to solutions: spoiler alert...if solutions would automatically do it, they'd have done it by now!

Options - the blue section is all about generating potential solutions, even ones that have been rulled out or that you might not have considered yet. It's useful in this section to include any ideas that might sound 'silly' or way out; you can always rule them out later.

Will & Way Forward - the final pink section is about bringing all of it together, making some choices from a place of having gone through the process and to focus on an action or a path to go forward. As they say, even a well-thought-through goal with no action will remain simply a nice dream. So this is the time to commit.

There is also an optional 'coach recap' card for each section. If you are learning coaching, these can be a great way to check-in with your client if you have asked enough questions in that section, or if there's 'more to come'.

The GROW model was never intended to be a sequential model - it is great to recognise that you need to return to a different section to refine the goal further, for example, or to generate additional options. It is a flexible set of questions to surface clarity and resourcefulness, so use it as is helpful.

Each card has a proprietary structure designed to cement your learning: a reason behind askng the question and a reminder or tip that supports it. The physical cards were designed almost 15 years ago to make it easier for new coaches to become more skilled and confident while they practice, so we know they work well. The bonus is that, the more you use the cards; the more intuitively you can remember the questions and the more natural coaching becomes.

And if you have found these cards useful, we have additional decks available to add further to your toolkit: the Intermediate and Advanced GROW decks follow on from this deck, with increasingly powerful questions as you become confident in your own coaching skills. And there are other decks available for Developing Emotional Intelligence, Building Personal Resilience, carrying out Successful Appraisals, working with Values and also Strengths.
